Two cars, two lanes, opposite directions

Speed Racer looks like a simple top-down oval race, but the two cars on the track are driving in opposite directions. The road is split into an inner and an outer lane, and every time the cars meet they need to be in different lanes, or the round ends in a crash. Play One Player or Two Player and watch the number in the middle of the track climb while you stay clean.

How to play Speed Racer

  1. Choose One Player or Two Player from the main menu.
  2. Your car laps the oval while the other car comes around the opposite way, with both speeds shown in km/h at the top.
  3. Switch lanes before the cars meet so they pass side by side instead of head-on.
  4. A collision brings up the Crashed screen with your score and your best, and the restart button sets up the next round.

Tips to play better

  • Watch the other car, not your own, and work out which lane it is in as soon as it comes out of a bend.
  • Settle into your lane early on the straight; a last-second switch can steer you right into its path.
  • Do not flick back and forth between lanes, since one clean change per meeting is safer than weaving.
  • Glance at the two speed readouts; when the other car is quicker, it reaches your side of the oval sooner, so switch earlier.

Speed Racer FAQ

Why do the two cars keep meeting in Speed Racer?

They drive around the oval in opposite directions, so they meet again and again. Being in the other lane when that happens is the whole game.

What happens when the cars collide?

The round ends with a Crashed message that shows your score and your best so far. Press restart to line up the next round.
